My son is 6 years old and has been referred for assesment. Following the initital assesment, they said that they wanted to do the full in depth assesment which hopefully should start in April.
At the moment we are beside ourselves with his behaviour. At school he is a real conformist and is vry bright so he is a dream pupil, but at home he is often depressed, says he hates school, is bored and wanders around winding everyone up. His main interests are the weather and trains but he no longer spends all his time at that. He wont play with toys, we cannot find anything to keep his interest so he just upsets everyone and gets aggressive, hitting his brother and sister and us his parents. We just dont know what to do.
Can anyone who has a child possibly with Aspergers themselves give me any pointers on what activities we could do with him to channel his boredom into something constructive

You really need to take an interest in what he's doing and not just sit back and watch him play take him out and play with him get his brother and sister to help him. But don't wrap him in cotton wool. yes he mite have a disability but it does not end there.

he is human after all i would ask the autistic society what else you can do with him.

be careful there are a lot of fakes on here claiming to have aspergers and they have not been dianosed and they use it as a joke or a throw-away line

My 6 year old has been diagnosed with Aspergers. My son enjoys building with Lego, reading books on how things are made. His all time favourite activity is playing the Wii. He however, can not play for long periods of time. You may find that their favourite activities can be over stimulating ( flushed face, vibrating with energy after it is turned off, making poor choices). The wii we find helpful because it is physical activity. My sons transitions are really difficult. we use a lot of visuals. He is a very good reader but still the pictures help immensely My son also often has difficulty after being at school all day. There is so much stimuli there that by the time he is home he has nothing left in the tank, he becomes easily frustrated etc. We have implemented a marble jar reward system. If he is upset and makes a good choice to use his words rather than hit he gets a marble ( Never remove marbles that have already been given). If you can find that activity that he loves like the park or even a fast food treat, use the marbles toward receiving that reward. At first make it really easy so the recognition is there so he wont lose interest. Have you tried swimming? My suggestion ( from past experience) is to try as often as possible to give them a choice in things. They don't have to be significant ie) what to wear, if trying a new activity such as swimming - what swim ring would you like to buy or swim trunks, pick out your favourite towel to bring out of the closet. those little things help them feel less anxious. Also many autistic children like the feeling of trampolines or riding horses. Things with rhythmic motion. Other ideas might be making a fort out of household things( bed sheets and chesterfield cushions), baking, science experiments such as leaving an egg in vinegar for 2 or 3 days until it turns rubber like. Anyway I could go on forever, feel free to contact me by email. You are doing a great job just by asking others for help. I understand very much how hard it is on those difficult to manage days. Take care

I have an eight year old who is interested in legos. I know what you are going through and the only thing that I can find that helps is just showing him tons of stuff until he picks up some interest. Try to stay patient and everything should be okay. Also try not to be in a rush. Furthermore we have had behavioral issues recently at school and we recently started a gluten free diet and it really seems to help his attitude.
